The year is 2056, fifty years in advance of today. What does the world look like in fifty years? What are its most prevalent challenges? Technology and innovation are constant accelerators that propel us through a changing world.

Problem:
Your mission should you choose to accept it is to design a home for the future. This home is not your traditional home. Your creation will press the envelope of the current housing industry. You are encouraged to think as far and broad as you are able. The project is on an isolated parcel of land. Its immediate context is its natural environment.

Site Plan

The building footprint must fit within the dotted lines (20’ set back area). The building may be oriented in any direction that the designer sees fit. The overall design is at the sole discretion of the designer.

Rooms (the following areas are minimum requirements, and may be manipulated as needed to allow for design innovation):

  • Kitchen
  • Dining Room
  • Living Room
  • Entry Foyer
  • 3 bedrooms total
  • 1 bedroom with adjacent bath
  • 2 full bathrooms
  • Storage areas – bedrooms, bathrooms, and Entry Foyer should have storage areas
  • Garage
  • Den or Sunroom
  • Support Space (Closets/Laundry area/Walkways/ Driveways/etc.)

References:
Participants are free to use any reference available to help design the ultimate home. The project should be comprehensive in scope. Include windows, doors, stairs, and furniture in design.

Visit sketchup.google.com and download the free software. All students are encouraged to use the sketch up software to complete the design. There are several tutorials online that demonstrate the software’s capabilities.

All the competition participants can use Google SketchUp (free) to complete their entries. Once the competition is over a one-year Pro licenses will be given to the top ten students.

Recommended information for submissions includes site plan, building plans with suggested furniture layouts, elevations, and a brief project description.

No identifying information should be included on the design sheet. Design sheets which include any entrant identification will be disqualified. All information should be confined to a single un-mounted 24” x 36” sheet of paper. Submissions should be rolled and submitted to the front office at your school. Submissions received after the deadline of 3:00 pm March 26, 2007 will be disqualified.
